The Value of Home Labs for IT Pros and Students: Advice and Tips
Maintaining a home lab can be viewed very positively by IT hiring managers, as it demonstrates a candidate's commitment to continuous learning, practical skills development, and problem-solving abilities. While specific data on this topic may not be widely available, several points support the notion that home labs are beneficial:
Demonstrates Proactive Learning: A home lab shows that a candidate is proactive about their education and is willing to invest time and resources to enhance their skills outside of formal training or work responsibilities.
Practical Experience: Home labs allow candidates to gain hands-on experience with technologies they might not encounter in their day-to-day job. This practical experience can be very appealing to hiring managers.
Problem-Solving Skills: Setting up and maintaining a home lab often involves troubleshooting and problem-solving, which are critical skills in IT roles.
Passion for Technology: Maintaining a home lab indicates a genuine interest and passion for technology, which can be a deciding factor for many hiring managers.
Current Knowledge: Home labs can help candidates stay current with the latest technologies and trends, making them more attractive to employers looking for up-to-date skills.
While there might not be extensive direct research specifically on home labs, related studies and surveys indicate the value of practical, self-directed learning:
LinkedIn Learning Report (2022): This report emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and upskilling, highlighting that 94% of employees would stay at a company longer if it invested in their learning and development.
CompTIA's IT Industry Outlook (2023): This report notes the increasing demand for IT professionals who can demonstrate practical, hands-on skills, which can be developed and showcased through a home lab.
Many IT professionals and hiring managers have shared positive feedback on forums and social media platforms about the benefits of home labs. For instance, in discussions on Reddit’s r/sysadmin and r/networking, many users and hiring managers express appreciation for candidates who maintain home labs, often citing it as a significant advantage in the hiring process.
While direct data might be limited, the available evidence and general sentiment in the industry strongly suggest that maintaining a home lab is viewed positively by IT hiring managers. It showcases a candidate's initiative, practical skills, and passion for the field, making them more competitive in the job market.

I'm still none the wiser after countless winget videos on how to use this tool over the network reliably with a product like pdqinventory for example. Maybe 1 out of 3 work. Best solution I've found so far (which I don't like as I'd like it to be more on the fly and interactive) is to try and find a way to run it locally through either a scheduled task or copy script files out to the computers first for a local run (emulated)

When looking into any Intel CPU datasheet one can notice lots of applied technologies like Intel Speed Select Technology - Performance Profile, Intel Advanced Matrix Extensions (AMX), Intel Control-Flow Enforcement Technology and so on. thank you, interesting to see the mikrotik software, how it feels a little different to major vendors. i recommend people explore the guis of any network equipment they come across too. the cli is the way to do most stuff when you get a little experience, but the management guis provide another way to look at the same configs, as well as providing dashboards and monitoring graphics you don't get with the cli. last week i had to install java and run microsoft edge in internet explorer mode to check out the gui of an old hpe procurve switch. fun and interesting both

The biggest problem Mr -V is twith he whole negligent hiring practices that go on now and days. It's about your background when it comes to criminal background Then you have the opposite , where if you are a more advanced computer user like myself you are thought of as a hacker type , because they don't fully understand what you do . I' tell people that I send emails across the globe they just don't get it., it's like you go outside the United States with communications

years ago a big attack went around. Even knock a few places off-line. The Mikrotik just keeped chugging away. Though it was in a pc box and not a router board. I don't know if you would call it an upgrade or not. Went to a cisco 880 then / current a Sonicwall. The Sonicwall I got for free for beta testing.

I agree with you 100% ! There is a huge distance between theory and real world, which must be covered by continiue practices. MikroTik has do excellent work on ruter OS and offer a full documendation with more than 1685 pages for online and alsow as pdf for downloading , where they explain everythhink in full detail . Virtual enviroments are good for start learning basics on IT as they do not brake anythink but they have serious lack of expirience in real coditions as the most setups performed automaticaly from the host machine when in real world you have to setup manualy any new component you connect to the net to avoid conflicts and have finaly a proper setup. So ,yes practice with real machines offer times better expirience and advanced training for everyone.

Combine all these issues and this problem very challenging.

What seems to be confusing is that there is a separate, distinct place in DCHP message structure, that seems to also be capable of containing boot file name, - the "File field", mentioned in HP documentation and it is also mentioned in RFC 2131 without any reference to PXE functionality.

As a presume we’re all proud Geeks here…I can’t stop myself from pointing out that notepad does not always save as a txt file. That wasn’t true when this was made either. To start with, rtf (possibly added after this) but I’m sure we all know that .bat works and there’s others as well. In a technical lesson about the registry it seems strange that he wouldn’t be clear that he’s presumably meaning “by default”. He’s specific with the other terms so that was strange to me.

Great comment, you have no idea after finishing a video how many mistakes or "less clear" communications I see once uploaded and published, that I should have done differently. UA-cam makes it difficult to fix any video once uploaded. Editing a single 20 minute video can take 35 hours and you would think I would see the problems but they slip right through. Many UA-cam Channels have production teams, but we have no such luxury. Thanks for the feedback!

You can actually do this _without_ support from the DHCP server. That's how the entire Intel PXE system is designed. The PXE server [what you call "proxyDHCP"] sees the DHCP transaction (because it's broadcast) and then repeats the DHCP response(s) with additional fields - using port 4011 as I recall. (that's the whole "Press F8" menu process) I've done that for over 20 years... on Linux. The more common method you're talking about needs the DHCP bootfile/server options to load a program designed to use the UNDI layer ("API"). There's a version of GRUB with support for the PXE/UNDI network layer. PXE is _not_ how laptops get repaired; not outside the factory, anyway. That's done by vendor specific recovery partitions, and/or UEFI "programs". (Your Dell slide doesn't have PXE in it anywhere.) Unless Intel has significantly updated the "standard", PXE does not directly understand HTTP/HTTPS, only TFTP and TCP/UDP. The program downloaded by TFTP can. (GRUB does) I don't have anything that understands a URL as a bootfile.
